The company’s roots extend to 1969 with the founding of Datacard Corporation, a pioneer in plastic card personalization systems. In 2013, Datacard acquired Entrust Inc., a public key infrastructure (PKI) specialist spun off from Nortel in 1994, and the combined entity rebranded as Entrust in 2020. Today, Entrust develops hardware and software for card and ID issuance, identity verification, authentication, certificate lifecycle management, hardware security modules (HSMs), and post-quantum cryptography. The company serves financial institutions, governments, and enterprises globally, processing billions of secure transactions annually. Its portfolio includes the widely deployed Entrust Identity Enterprise IAM platform, nCipher HSMs, Onfido’s AI-powered identity verification, and the Entrust Cryptographic Security Platform. In January 2025, Entrust sold its publicly trusted certificate authority business to Sectigo. Headquartered in Shakopee, Minnesota, Entrust employs approximately 3,000 people. In July 2025, the company announced that Tony Ball would succeed Todd Wilkinson as CEO, effective March 31, 2026, marking a new chapter of leadership focused on expanding the company’s identity and security footprint.
