The University of Vienna (Universität Wien) is a public research university in Vienna, Austria, and the oldest university in the German-speaking world. Founded on 12 March 1365 by Duke Rudolph IV, it has operated continuously for over 660 years, making it one of the oldest universities in Europe still in operation. The university is a comprehensive institution offering 185 degree programmes (as of the 2024–2025 academic year) across a wide range of disciplines, including humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, law, business, and medicine. With approximately 85,000 students and around 11,000 employees, it is one of the largest higher education institutions in Europe. Around one third of its student body comes from abroad, and the university maintains partnerships with more than 400 universities worldwide. The University of Vienna is associated with 17 Nobel Prize laureates and has been home to numerous influential thinkers such as Sigmund Freud, Erwin Schrödinger, Karl Popper, and Friedrich Hayek. Its budget for the 2024–2025 academic year is €848.1 million. The institution is a member of several international university networks, including the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities and the Circle U. European University Alliance.
