The North West Gambling Board (NWGB) is the statutory regulator of all legal gambling activities in the North West Province of South Africa, established in 2001 under the North West Gambling Act. Classified as a Schedule 3C Public Entity, the Board is responsible for licensing and overseeing casinos, betting, bingo, limited payout machines, and online platforms within the province. Its headquarters are in Mahikeng, and it operates under the governance of a Board of Directors appointed by the provincial MEC. The NWGB’s vision is to be a leading and socially conscious gambling authority while contributing to provincial economic growth. It actively combats illegal gambling through partnerships with SAPS, Home Affairs, and municipal authorities; in early 2025, a major operation in Ganyesa resulted in the seizure of 68 illegal gambling computers and five Chinese Roulette machines. The Board also promotes responsible gambling through the National Responsible Gambling Programme. Day-to-day management is led by Acting CEO Boitumelo Qalinge and an executive team.

The KwaZulu-Natal Economic Regulatory Authority (KZNERA) is a provincial statutory body established in May 2024 through the merger of the KwaZulu-Natal Gaming and Betting Board and the KwaZulu-Natal Liquor Authority. It consolidates regulatory oversight of the gambling, horse-racing, and liquor industries within KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Headquartered in Pietermaritzburg with a secondary office in Durban, KZNERA operates under the KwaZulu-Natal Economic Regulatory Authority Act of 2024 as a Schedule 3C public entity. Its mandate includes licensing, compliance monitoring, enforcement, consumer education, and dispute resolution, aiming to ensure fair competition, market integrity, and stakeholder protection. The authority also drives transformation and economic empowerment in the sectors it regulates. KZNERA is rolling out digital platforms such as the Gambling Licensing Online Portal and a forthcoming Liquor Licensing Online Portal to improve efficiency and transparency. It is overseen by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) and has an interim board led by Chairperson Mbali Myeni and CEO Portia Baloyi.
