History

BDO Stoy Hayward LLP was created in 1994 when Stoy Hayward (itself dating to 1903 with founders Fred Stoy and Jack Hayward) merged with BDO Binder Hamlyn (established 1923). The union brought together two well-respected practices and formed a powerful mid-market competitor. In the years following, the firm expanded through strategic hires and bolt-on acquisitions, building a strong reputation in audit, tax, and advisory. During the 2008–2009 financial crisis, the firm cut 10% of its partners to remain competitive, a move managing partner Simon Michaels described as necessary to reshape the business in the market environment. In 2010, the global BDO network rebranded, and the UK entity dropped "Stoy Hayward" from its name to become BDO LLP, aligning with the unified BDO brand present in over 160 countries.
