History and Corporate Structure

BetCity was founded by Melvin Bostelaar, a Dutch entrepreneur who built the company in Amsterdam before the Netherlands opened its regulated online gambling market. The brand’s licensed operating entity, Betent B.V., became one of the early holders of a Dutch online gambling licence, allowing BetCity to go live under the BetCity.nl brand when the market formally opened on 1 October 2021. The company was designed specifically for the Dutch market from the outset, with Dutch-language sports betting, casino games, and customer-facing operations tailored to local consumers.

The most significant corporate event in BetCity’s history was its acquisition by Entain plc, the FTSE-listed group behind Ladbrokes, Coral, bwin, partypoker, and Unibet. Entain announced the deal in December 2021 and completed it in 2022, making BetCity a wholly owned subsidiary within Entain’s global portfolio. The acquisition gave Entain one of the leading Dutch-facing online gambling businesses in Europe’s newly regulated Dutch market. BetCity retained its own brand, management team, and Amsterdam headquarters rather than being merged into one of Entain’s existing consumer-facing brands.

Licensing and Regulation

BetCity is regulated by the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), the Dutch gambling regulator. Its licence covers both online sports betting and online casino gaming, and as a Dutch licensee it must comply with the country’s strict remote gambling regime. This includes mandatory player identification, deposit limits, advertising restrictions, and integration with the Dutch national self-exclusion register, Cruks. Because BetCity is part of the Entain group, it also operates under Entain’s group-wide anti-money-laundering, safer gambling, and compliance policies.

Products and Platforms

BetCity operates a single flagship consumer brand, BetCity.nl, across several product verticals. The BetCity Sportsbook offers Dutch-language pre-match and live betting, with football and other sports popular in the Netherlands at the core of the product. The BetCity Casino provides an online casino experience with slots, table games, and game-show-style titles from multiple software providers. A dedicated live-dealer casino offers real-time blackjack, roulette, and other table games. BetCity also offers native mobile applications for both sports betting and casino play on iOS and Android.

Market Position

Since its regulated launch, BetCity has been one of the leading online gambling operators in the Netherlands. Its early entry into the legal Dutch market, combined with strong local branding and a visible sponsorship presence in Dutch sport, helped it build a substantial customer base. The company is often cited as a mass-market leader in Dutch sports betting, and its acquisition by Entain underlined its commercial value as one of the country’s established online betting brands. BetCity continues to compete with other KSA-licensed operators in a market that includes both international groups and the state-owned Holland Casino online offering.
