History and Founding

Boughton Law was founded in 1949 in Vancouver, British Columbia, by two UBC law graduates: James Edgar Boughton, K.C., and Leslie R. Peterson, K.C. The firm's founding vision was to be driven by innovation rather than tradition. In 1993, Boughton Law opened a Hong Kong office, becoming the first Canadian law firm to do so, marking a significant international expansion. The firm has been continuously based in Vancouver for over 75 years, serving the West Coast community while developing a global practice.

Its Corporate & Commercial group advises public and private companies on mergers, acquisitions, reverse mergers, cross-border transactions, financing, securities law compliance, and corporate governance, with clients listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, and NYSE. The Real Estate group has supported commercial real estate, development, and management firms for over 70 years, and its commercial leasing group has negotiated millions of square feet of leases. The Securities Law group specializes in regulatory and non-regulatory matters including capital markets transactions. The Indigenous Law group has been recognized for groundbreaking work in Indigenous equity investments, representing over 70 Indigenous communities in five landmark transactions aggregating over $2.5 billion since 2015, including the 2025 $736 million investment by 38 First Nations in Enbridge's Westcoast pipeline system. The Commercial Litigation group handles complex business disputes, while the Private Clients group covers wealth management, trusts and estates, wills, succession planning, and personal injury claims. The Public Sector / Administrative Law group provides legal guidance to government entities and represents clients before tribunals. The firm is a member of Meritas, a Chambers-ranked global network of independent law firms, enabling cross-border matters and international client support.
