Crown Resorts Limited is Australia’s largest casino and integrated-resort operator, owned by US private equity firm Blackstone since June 2022. It operates three flagship properties—Crown Melbourne, Crown Perth, and Crown Sydney—combining casinos, luxury hotels, restaurants, theatres, retail, and convention space. Crown Melbourne is the country’s biggest casino and entertainment complex, while Crown Sydney’s gaming floor, which opened in August 2022, is New South Wales’ only casino. The company was created in 2007 when James Packer’s Publishing and Broadcasting Limited demerged its gaming assets as Crown Limited, and it was renamed Crown Resorts in 2018. After a series of regulatory inquiries found serious failures in anti-money-laundering controls, governance, and junket relationships, Crown was allowed to keep its licences only under strict supervision and paid record penalties. The Blackstone takeover in 2022 triggered a major remediation programme, with a new board and executive team rebuilding compliance and governance systems. Crown now describes itself primarily as an entertainment company rather than a pure casino operator, while remaining one of Australia’s most visible gambling-industry names.

Detailed Review

History and Ownership

Crown Resorts traces its origins to the Melbourne casino that opened on the Yarra's south bank in 1994, developed by the group that James Packer's Publishing and Broadcasting Limited (PBL) came to control. In 2007, PBL demerged its media and gaming arms, floating the gaming assets as Crown Limited on the Australian Securities Exchange. The company renamed itself Crown Resorts Limited in 2018. It expanded beyond Melbourne with the acquisition of Western Australia's Burswood casino, renamed Crown Perth, and later developed the Crown Sydney hotel and casino at Barangaroo.

Expansion and Divestments

Over the following decade, Crown's portfolio extended well beyond its Australian resorts. At its peak it held international interests including Macau's Melco Crown Entertainment and London's Aspinalls, and it launched online sportsbook CrownBet in 2012. CrownBet was rebranded BetEasy and sold to GVC Holdings, now Entain, in 2019, ending Crown's direct participation in online betting. These divestments reflected a strategic shift back to its core Australian integrated-resort business ahead of the ownership change that followed.

Regulatory Crisis

A 2019 police investigation and media reporting into junket operators exposed alleged money-laundering at Crown Melbourne, and in late 2019, 19 Crown employees were detained in China over gambling-promotion offences. Three formal reviews followed: the Bergin inquiry in New South Wales, the Victorian Royal Commission, and the Western Australian Royal Commission. All three found Crown unsuitable to hold casino licences, citing serious and systemic failures in anti-money-laundering controls, irresponsible gambling conduct, and questionable associate relationships. Crown was permitted to keep its licences only under strict supervision, with penalties including a record A$450 million fine from AUSTRAC in 2023 for breaches of Australia's anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorism financing laws.

Blackstone Era

In March 2021, Crown agreed to a takeover by Blackstone, which completed on 22 June 2022 at A$13.10 per share, valuing the company at approximately A$8.9 billion and ending Crown's ASX listing. The new board, chaired by William McBeath, installed CEO Ciarán Carruthers, previously Crown's COO and before that a senior MGM Resorts executive. Under Blackstone ownership, Crown pursued a large remediation agenda covering new AML/CTF systems, a dedicated responsible-gambling division, transformed executive ranks, and strengthened board governance. The long-delayed Crown Sydney casino finally opened in August 2022, becoming New South Wales' only casino. Regulators continued to monitor Crown Melbourne and Crown Perth under special-manager arrangements into 2024.

Business Model and Market Position

Crown's core revenue comes from casino gaming across its three Australian resorts, supplemented by hotels, restaurants, bars, theatres, retail and convention facilities. Crown Melbourne is Australia's largest casino, with more than 500 gaming tables and around 2,600 poker machines, plus three hotels and dozens of food and beverage venues. Crown Perth and Crown Sydney add further high-end hotel and entertainment capacity. As a private company under Blackstone, Crown no longer publishes detailed financial results, but it remains one of Australia's largest hospitality employers with roughly 11,000 staff. Its principal competitors include other Australian casino operators such as The Star Entertainment Group, together with broader entertainment and hospitality venues in each city. The group's strategic focus since the takeover has been on remediating legacy compliance failures, rebuilding regulatory trust, and shifting public perception from a troubled casino business to a diversified entertainment company.

Properties and Brands

Crown Melbourne is the flagship integrated resort in Southbank, Australia's largest casino floor and home to the Crown Towers, Crown Metropol and Crown Promenade hotels. Crown Perth, at Burswood in Western Australia, includes a casino floor, two hotels, restaurants, a theatre and a golf course. Crown Sydney at Barangaroo houses the luxury Crown Towers hotel and, since August 2022, New South Wales' only casino. The group also once operated the CrownBet and BetEasy online sports-betting platforms, which were sold to GVC Holdings in 2019, and held substantial interests in Melco Crown Entertainment and Crown Aspinalls before divesting them by 2017.
