GamblePause

History & Founding

GamblePause was founded in 2024 by Ladipo Abiose Akolade, who drew on his own experience with gambling addiction to create a support structure for others. The organization was registered as a nonprofit under the name GamblePause Initiative Africa. Akolade has stated that he designed the logo while still in recovery, never anticipating the scale it would reach. Within two years, GamblePause had generated over 1.9 million digital impressions and established partnerships with international bodies.

Mission & Approach

The organization's mission is preventing and reducing gambling-related harm through research, education, and support services. It takes a holistic approach, collaborating with healthcare professionals, researchers, industry representatives, and policymakers. Emphasis is placed on compassionate, non-judgmental support and evidence-based interventions.

Services & Products

GamblePause offers a range of free services. The 24/7 confidential helpline (+234 813 232 7149) provides telephone support for problem gamblers and their families. Digital self-exclusion tools help individuals block gambling platforms. An anonymous online assessment quiz allows users to evaluate their behavior. The organization also operates a physical rehabilitation center that can be toured virtually. Public awareness campaigns, such as "GamblePause Awareness", promote responsible gambling and taking breaks. Additionally, the organization conducts research on gambling harm in African contexts and publishes educational resources on financial and time management.

Partnerships & Milestones

In January 2026, GamblePause was named Clarion Gaming's Safer Gambling Charity Partner, the first African organization to receive this designation. The charity expanded into Zambia through a partnership with GamAid Zambia, establishing GamblePause Zambia. It actively participates in industry events such as SiGMA Africa and the iGaming AFRIKA Summit, showcasing its work and networking with stakeholders.

Leadership

The founder and executive director is Ladipo Abiose Akolade, whose personal recovery journey inspired the initiative. The CFO/Team Lead is Babs, a management consultant and investment professional who oversees financial operations and strategic direction. No other C-level executives are publicly named.
