Founding and History

Paul Gauselmann started in the amusement trade in the 1950s, looking after jukeboxes and coin-operated amusements in the Westphalian town of Espelkamp. He founded the company in 1957, and during the following decades Gauselmann gradually moved from machine servicing into machine production and arcade operation. The Merkur brand first appeared as a slot-machine line in the 1970s and became ubiquitous in German arcades; the group also expanded abroad through distributorships and foreign subsidiaries.

The group is vertically integrated: its engineers and studios build the games, factories assemble cabinets, software companies install back-office systems, and the retail arm puts the slots on its own floors. Regulation and Licensing

Land-based gaming in Germany is governed by federal state law, and the group's machines hold the permits required by local authorities. Since the entry into force of the 2021 German Interstate Treaty on Gambling, online slots and virtual slot-machine games are also subject to licences from the Gemeinsame Glücksspielbehörde der Länder; Merkur Interactive has been active in that regulated German online market. Outside Germany, licences are obtained in the relevant jurisdictions, including Malta for EU-facing online gaming.

Paul Gauselmann passed day-to-day control of the Gauselmann AG executive board to his daughter Claudia Gauselmann, now chairwoman of the executive board; the founder has retained a role in the ownership bodies. The company has continued to invest in digitalisation, cashless technology, and closer links between its retail and online channels. It also positions player protection and responsible-gambling systems as central parts of the Merkur group's operating standards.
