History & Founding

JCJ Architecture was founded in 1936 in Hartford, Connecticut by architect Sherwood Jeter Jr. as S.F. Jeter, Architect. Over the ensuing decades, the firm evolved through successive generations of ownership, eventually becoming JCJ Architecture. In 2001, under the leadership of Peter Stevens (then President), the firm completed a transition from closely held principal ownership to a 100% Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), a structure that has provided stability and employee‑ownership continuity for more than 13 years. In 2025, the firm acquired Boston‑based Group One Partners (G1), a move that expanded its hospitality and gaming design capabilities and strengthened its presence in New England. JCJ now operates seven offices nationwide.

JCJ offers comprehensive planning, architecture, and interior design services. Its primary market sectors include K‑12 and Higher Education – school and university facilities that support learning and community engagement; Civic & Community – public buildings, libraries, municipal centers, and affordable housing (e.g., adaptive reuse projects with WinnCompanies); Gaming & Hospitality – destination resorts, casinos, branded hotels, and boutique properties (the firm is a regular exhibitor at the Global Gaming Expo); and Workplace – corporate headquarters, creative offices, tenant fit‑outs, and retail banking. The firm also provides pre‑design planning, stakeholder engagement, and sustainability consulting (LEED AP staff). It is licensed in 43 states and the District of Columbia.

Recent Developments

In June 2025, JCJ announced a leadership transition: Scott Celella (formerly COO since 2002) became President, succeeding Peter Stevens, who moved to Principal/President Emeritus. Barry Goldstein (formerly Western Region Managing Director) became Chief Operations Officer. James E. LaPosta Jr. continues as Chief Architectural Officer. Also in 2025, JCJ acquired Group One Partners, adding hospitality and gaming expertise and an expanded Boston office. The firm maintains an active presence at industry events such as the Global Gaming Expo and Hotel Management conferences.
