History and Governance

The Football Kenya Federation is the supreme administrative body for football in Kenya. Its primary role encompasses organizing all national football competitions, managing the national teams (men's, women's, and youth), enforcing the rules of the game, and promoting the sport's development across the country. The FKF operates 47 county branches that help implement its programs and manage local leagues.

The current FKF structure was established in November 2011 after the dissolution of Football Kenya Limited (FKL). The federation has historically been led by an elected president, with the most recent election held in late 2024. The leadership crisis of 2022, caused by the Kenyan government's suspension of the federation, led to FIFA imposing a suspension on Kenya, which was eventually lifted in November 2022 after the government reinstated the FKF. The new era under President Hussein Mohammed is focused on implementing FIFA's recommendations for good governance and transparency.

Competitions

The FKF’s primary product is its organized league system. The flagship competition is the Kenyan Premier League (KPL), the top men's division, currently sponsored by Mozzart Bet. The second-tier men's division is the National Super League (NSL), followed by regional FKF Division One leagues. For women, the top division is the Kenyan Women’s Premier League (KWPL), with the FKF Women Division One as the second tier. The federation also runs the Mozzart Bet Cup (formerly the FKF Cup), a knockout competition for all affiliated clubs, akin to the FA Cup. Additionally, the FKF manages the licensing of clubs for participation in CAF competitions and runs development programs including academy accreditation, coaching courses, and referee training.

Digital and Administration

To modernize its operations, the FKF has launched the eFKF platform, a comprehensive online portal offering digital services such as team and player registration, league management, match official reporting, dispute resolution, and coaching/referee course applications. This system aims to streamline administrative processes and improve transparency. The federation’s major long-term sponsorship partners include betting company Mozzart Bet.

Challenges and Outlook

The FKF has historically struggled with financial mismanagement and governance disputes. The 2022 suspension highlighted tensions between the government and the football authorities. The new administration has cited restoring trust, clearing debts, and securing long-term funding as its primary goals. The federation is also engaged in a significant partnership with KEFWA (Kenya Footballers Welfare Association) to improve player welfare and financial literacy. The long-term outlook depends heavily on the administration's ability to secure consistent funding, improve infrastructure, and further professionalize the local game.
