Detailed Review
History
Las Vegas Sands Corp. was founded on November 17, 1988, in Las Vegas, Nevada, when Sheldon G. Adelson and his partners Richard Katzeff, Irwin Chafetz, Ted Cutler, and Jordan Shapiro purchased the historic Sands Hotel and Casino. Adelson, who had previously built the COMDEX computer trade show into a major industry event, used the proceeds from its sale in 1995 to finance the demolition of the old Sands and the construction of The Venetian Las Vegas, which opened in 1999. The Venetian was notable for its themed design inspired by Venice, Italy, and its integration of a large convention center, the Sands Expo and Convention Center. The adjacent The Palazzo opened in 2007, and together they formed the world's largest hotel under one roof with 7,000 all-suite rooms.
During the 2008 financial crisis, Adelson invested $1 billion of his personal capital to keep the company afloat. The company's expansion into Asia proved transformative: it pioneered the development of Macau's Cotai Strip with the opening of Sands Macao in 2004, followed by The Venetian Macao (2007), The Plaza Macao (2008), The Parisian Macao (2016), and The Londoner Macao (2021). In Singapore, Marina Bay Sands opened in 2010 and became a landmark integrated resort with a distinctive three-tower design crowned by a sky park. In 2022, Las Vegas Sands sold its Las Vegas properties (The Venetian and The Palazzo) for $6.25 billion to Apollo Global Management and VICI Properties, completing its pivot to Asia.
Business Model
Las Vegas Sands operates an integrated resort model that combines luxury accommodations, casino gaming, convention and exhibition spaces, retail malls, dining, and entertainment under one roof. Revenue is generated primarily from casino gaming (mass-market and premium tables, slots, private salons), hotel room bookings, retail leases, convention rentals, and food and beverage sales. The company focuses on destination tourism in Macau and Singapore, targeting both leisure and business travelers.
Properties
Key properties include Marina Bay Sands in Singapore (2,561-room hotel, large casino, mall, convention center, ArtScience Museum, SkyPark), The Venetian Macao (3,000 suites, 550,000 sq ft casino, convention center), The Londoner Macao (2,400 rooms, themed after London), The Parisian Macao (3,000 rooms, half-scale Eiffel Tower), Sands Macao (first Macau property), and Plaza Macao (includes Four Seasons Hotel Macao, luxury retail). The Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas was sold in 2022 but remains a historic asset.
Market Position and Competition
As of 2025, Las Vegas Sands is the second-largest casino company globally by revenue (behind MGM Resorts), with strong financial performance driven by the recovery of tourism in Asia. It competes with other integrated resort operators such as Wynn Resorts, Galaxy Entertainment, and SJM Holdings in Macau, and with Marina Bay Sands' unique position in Singapore.
Recent Developments
In 2024, the company shut down a live-dealer streaming platform project, ending about 150 local jobs. Patrick Dumont became Chairman and CEO effective March 1, 2026. The company continues to invest in digital gaming ventures and sustainability initiatives, with a workforce of over 40,000 employees.
