History and Ownership

Manx Telecom Ltd. constitutes the backbone of the Isle of Man’s digital economy. The company was created specifically to bid on the 20-year telecommunications licence that the Isle of Man Government put out to tender in 1985, a process that saw British Telecom’s newly formed Manx-registered subsidiary compete with Cable & Wireless. Manx Telecom won the tender and commenced operations on 1 January 1987, inheriting the island’s telephone system previously run by the British General Post Office.

Over the ensuing decades, the company underwent significant ownership changes that shaped its strategic direction. Following the demerger of BT Wireless in 2001, it became part of mmO2, which was later acquired by Telefónica in 2006. In June 2010, HgCapital and CPS Partners acquired Manx Telecom in a deal valued at £158.8 million, and the company subsequently floated on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange in 2014. In May 2019, Basalt Infrastructure Partners LLP completed a £255 million acquisition, taking the company private once more. The most recent chapter opened in 2025, when CVC DIF and Jersey Telecom partnered to acquire Manx Telecom Group, with the transaction finalising in May 2026.

Service Portfolio and Market Position

Manx Telecom’s service portfolio covers the full spectrum of fixed and mobile communications. Its core residential offering includes fibre broadband with speeds up to gigabit, copper broadband, pay-monthly and pay-as-you-go mobile plans, and fixed-line telephony. Business customers can access hosted VoIP, SIP trunking, IT hardware, and dedicated fibre connectivity. The company also operates two Tier III data centres on the island, providing colocation, cloud, and secure data hosting services. Its Global Solutions division extends beyond the Isle of Man through MVNO agreements and international roaming partnerships, and Manx Telecom has built a growing IoT business enabling global device connectivity.

The company holds a near-monopoly on fixed-line infrastructure on the Isle of Man, operating the island’s sole copper and fibre access networks. Competition comes from Sure, Noventre Limited, Domicilium, and BlueWave Communications. Financially, Manx Telecom reported revenue of £81.47 million in 2018 (the most recent publicly available figure) and an operating income of £11.57 million. Employee headcount has remained stable at over 300, with the workforce drawn almost entirely from the local community.

Leadership and Recent Developments

Under CEO Gary Lamb, who joined in 2011 as CFO and was promoted to CEO in July 2015, the company has navigated both public listing and private ownership while maintaining a focus on customer service and digital innovation. The recent CVC DIF/Jersey Telecom acquisition positions Manx Telecom for further investment in next-generation networks, including 5G and fibre-to-the-premises expansion, while leveraging cross-Crown-Dependencies synergies with Jersey Telecom.
