The Rank Group Plc is a British gambling operator listed on the London Stock Exchange and one of the largest land-based casino and bingo businesses in the UK. Its two flagship consumer brands are Grosvenor Casinos, the UK's largest casino chain, and Mecca Bingo, the country's leading bingo club brand, both supported by a substantial online business. The company traces its origins to the Rank Organisation, the film production and distribution group founded by J. Arthur Rank in 1937, and it became a focused gambling operator after selling its non-gaming leisure assets in the mid-2000s. Control rests with Malaysia's Guoco Group, part of the Hong Leong Group. Rank employs approximately 9,000 people, mainly in its high-street venues, and generates annual revenue of more than £700 million, with around a quarter coming from digital channels. In the year to 30 June 2024 the group reported strong full-year growth, with revenue up about 10% year on year. In addition to its UK estate, Rank operates bingo and slots venues in Spain under the Enracha brand and holds online licences in several regulated European markets.
Detailed Review
Corporate History
Rank’s present identity is the result of a long corporate evolution. The business began in 1937, when Yorkshire industrialist J. Arthur Rank incorporated the Rank Organisation as a film production and distribution company. It later expanded into cinemas, hotels, holiday parks, restaurants, and, from the 1970s, bingo and casinos, and the 1991 acquisition of Mecca Leisure made it the UK’s leading bingo operator. The company was renamed The Rank Group Plc in 1996 and, after a strategic review in the mid-2000s, sold its film-services and other non-gambling assets, including Hard Rock International, to become a focused gambling operator. Malaysia’s Guoco Group, part of the Hong Leong Group, acquired a controlling stake in 2006 and retains it today.
Business Model
Rank makes its money through B2C gambling operations spanning retail venues and online channels. Grosvenor Casinos contributes table games, poker, electronic gaming, and slots across a nationwide estate, while Mecca Bingo’s clubs and online rooms generate bingo, slots, and casino-style revenue. The digital arm, Rank Interactive, runs the online casino and bingo businesses for both flagship brands and accounts for roughly a quarter of group revenue. Spain’s Enracha venues add a smaller international retail operation.
Products and Digital Expansion
The group’s consumer brands include Grosvenor Casinos, Mecca Bingo, and Enracha in Spain, alongside online bingo brands acquired with Stride Gaming plc in 2019, such as Kitty Bingo and Lucky Pants Bingo. The Stride Gaming purchase significantly accelerated Mecca’s online growth. Rank also offers Mecca-branded online bingo in Italy through a local licence.
Market Position
Rank is one of the UK’s largest casino and bingo operators, with Grosvenor the largest casino chain by venues and Mecca the leading bingo brand. Its main UK competitors include large online-led operators and other retail gambling groups, while its scale gives it a prominent voice in industry consultations. As a member of the Betting and Gaming Council, Rank engages with the Gambling Commission and UK government on regulatory change.
Regulation and Reform
The UK’s April 2023 White Paper on gambling reform led to measures including a £5 maximum stake on online slots for adults aged 25 and over from April 2024, as well as land-based casino modernisation that Rank’s management has publicly supported. Rank’s operations are licensed by the Gambling Commission in Great Britain and by regulators in other jurisdictions where it operates, and its Spanish venues are subject to local regional gambling rules.
Financial and Strategic Outlook
Rank’s land-based estate was severely affected by COVID-19 lockdowns, but the group staged a sustained recovery through 2022 to 2024. In the year ended 30 June 2024, revenue rose approximately 10% to above £700 million, helped by Grosvenor’s table-game performance, Mecca’s resilience, and continued digital growth. In early 2024 Rank announced a review of its casino and bingo venue portfolio, citing higher business rates, the national living wage, and new online slots stake limits, and it continues to run a cost-efficiency programme. The group employed around 9,000 people at the time of its most recent annual report, the large majority in clubs and casinos.
