SBTech is a B2B sports betting and iGaming technology provider founded in 2007 and based in London, with origins in Israel. It supplies licensed operators with modular, API-driven technology covering sportsbook, live betting, casino aggregation, player accounts and virtual sports. The company built its reputation as one of the largest independent sportsbook platform suppliers in Europe and expanded across regulated markets in Africa, Latin America and Asia. After the 2018 fall of PASPA, SBTech became a significant enabler of U.S. sports-betting launches, supplying technology to operators entering newly legalized states. In 2019, DraftKings and special purpose acquisition company Diamond Eagle Acquisition Corp. agreed to combine with SBTech in a deal valued at over $3 billion; the transaction closed in April 2020 and took DraftKings public on Nasdaq. Since then, SBTech has operated as the core B2B betting and gaming technology division of DraftKings, underpinning DraftKings' own sportsbook and casino while continuing to serve external clients. At the time of the merger, SBTech had roughly 600-700 employees globally.
Detailed Review
History and Origins
SBTech was founded in 2007 with initial development and R&D in Israel and later operational headquarters in London. It grew through regulated-market expansion in Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia, becoming one of the few independent large-scale sportsbook platform suppliers in the iGaming market. The company held licenses with regulators including the UK Gambling Commission and Malta Gaming Authority, and later obtained state-level certifications across U.S. jurisdictions.
Business Model
SBTech's business model is B2B platform supply: operators can deploy a full turnkey sportsbook or integrate individual modules via APIs into existing products. The company earns through platform licensing, recurring service fees, managed trading services and revenue-share arrangements. Its platform is built around modular, API-driven components rather than a single monolithic sportsbook, giving operators flexibility to combine SBTech functions with their own technology.
Core Products
SBTech's product set includes sportsbook front-ends, pre-match and live betting, odds feeds, automated risk management, managed trading services, player account management, payments and fraud tools, responsible-gaming features, casino and live-casino content, and virtual sports. The sportsbook module covers cash-out, bet builder and multiple sports; the iGaming layer aggregates casino and live-casino content; and the PAM provides wallet, bonus, CRM and player-segmentation capabilities. All components are available through an open API model as part of a turnkey deployment or as standalone integrations.
Market Position
Before its combination with DraftKings, SBTech was considered one of the largest independent sports-betting platform providers in Europe, competing with Kambi, Playtech and GVC's technology stack. It differentiated itself through modular architecture and a track record of launching regulated sportsbooks across multiple markets. After PASPA was struck down in 2018, SBTech became a prominent B2B enabler of U.S. sports-betting launches, supplying technology to operators entering newly legalized states.
Merger with DraftKings
In 2018, Vitruvian Partners invested in SBTech, and Gavin Isaacs, formerly CEO of Bally Technologies and President/COO of Scientific Games, joined as CEO. In December 2019, DraftKings, SBTech and Diamond Eagle Acquisition Corp. announced a three-way business combination. The deal closed in April 2020, bringing DraftKings to Nasdaq under the ticker DKNG and making SBTech the core B2B betting and gaming technology division of the combined company. SBTech technology now underpins DraftKings' U.S. sportsbook and casino operations while continuing to support third-party B2B clients.
Current Status
SBTech's public-facing website remains sbtech.com, and the brand continues to describe itself as part of DraftKings. Separate SBTech-specific leadership is not currently disclosed in the same way it was before the merger, and SBTech-specific headcount is not separately published today.
