History

Sky Bet’s origins trace back to 1999, when the Sports Internet Group (SIG) was founded in Harrogate by Jeremy Fenn, Chris Akers, and Peter Wilkinson. SIG included Surrey Sports, a small telephone‑based bookmaker operating from a hotel suite in Alderney. In May 2000, BSkyB acquired SIG for £300 million, and after the dot‑com downturn, BSkyB refocused on the betting assets. Surrey Sports was rebranded as Sky Bet in July 2002, initially offering sports betting via interactive TV and the internet. The company expanded significantly in December 2006 when BSkyB purchased the 365 Media Group, bringing Total Bet, UK Betting, Oddschecker, and Sporting Life into the fold.

In 2015, Sky plc sold an 80 % stake to CVC Capital Partners for £600 million, retaining a 20 % stake and a long‑term licence for the Sky brand. The business was then sold to The Stars Group in 2018 for £3.4 billion before Flutter Entertainment acquired it in 2020 as part of its merger with The Stars Group. Today, Sky Betting & Gaming operates under Flutter’s UK & Ireland division, led by CEO Dan Taylor.

The company’s product suite comprises five core brands: Sky Bet – the flagship sportsbook offering pre‑match and in‑play betting across football, horse racing, cricket, and dozens of other sports, with features like BuildABet, Cash Out, and AccaFreeze; Sky Vegas – an online casino featuring over 130 games, including slots, roulette, blackjack, and branded titles such as Deal or No Deal; Sky Casino – a premium live‑dealer casino experience with roulette, blackjack, and baccarat streamed in real time; Sky Poker – a UK‑centred online poker room offering Texas Hold’em and Omaha in cash games and tournaments, with a strong community focus; and Sky Bingo – an online bingo platform with chat rooms, community events, and a selection of casino‑style side games.

Regulatory and Recent Developments

Regulatory scrutiny has been part of recent history. In March 2022, the UK Gambling Commission fined Sky Betting & Gaming £1.17 million for sending promotional emails to self‑excluded customers. In 2024, the Information Commissioner’s Office reprimanded the company for unlawful use of advertising cookies, and in 2025 a High Court judge ruled that Sky Bet had improperly used customer data and targeted a vulnerable player with marketing. Flutter has stated it is considering an appeal.

Despite these challenges, Sky Bet remains the UK’s most‑downloaded betting app, with over 4 million active accounts. Its sponsorship of the EFL (signed through 2028) includes a £1 million per‑season community fund, and it continues to invest in technology partnerships, such as its renewed two‑year sponsorship of The Overlap YouTube channel in 2025.
