Sportech PLC began its corporate life as Rodime PLC, a Scottish electronics company founded in 1979 that pioneered the 3.5-inch hard drive. By the late 1990s, Rodime had become a cash-rich shell, primarily engaged in patent litigation. In 2000, businessman Trevor Hemmings orchestrated the acquisition of Littlewoods Pools—a football pools business founded by John Moores in 1923—for £160 million, and the company was rebranded as Sportech PLC. This marked the entry into the gambling sector. Over the following years, Sportech expanded by acquiring competing pools operators Zetters (2002) and Vernons (2007), merging them into "The New Football Pools" in 2008. In 2010, the company purchased Scientific Games Racing, a major US bet-processing and tote technology provider, significantly broadening its presence in the North American horse racing industry.

Sportech operates a dual B2B and B2C model. On the B2C side, it holds exclusive licences to conduct pari-mutuel betting in Connecticut through its Winners venues, and a sports betting licence from the Connecticut Lottery Corporation via the Playsugarhouse brand. These venues generate revenue from wagering handle and related services. On the B2B side, the company supplies lottery solutions, iLottery software, and managed venue services to government and regulated clients worldwide. Its technology offerings include point-of-sale (ePOS), self-service, and mobile wagering platforms, as well as tote betting engines and commingling capabilities. The B2B segment provides recurring software licensing fees and service contracts.

Market Position and Competition

Sportech occupies a niche position as a provider of pari-mutuel and lottery technology in the US and selected international markets. In Connecticut, it holds exclusive licences for on-track and off-track horse race wagering, giving it a strong local moat. Competitors include larger gaming technology firms such as International Game Technology (IGT) and Scientific Games (now Light & Wonder), as well as smaller specialist providers. The company's focus on government-regulated lotteries and its historical roots in football pools give it a unique heritage, but its scale is modest compared to global leaders.

Recent Strategic Direction and Restructuring

In March 2017, Sportech sold its Football Pools division to OpCapita for £83 million, pivoting entirely to B2B gaming technology and its licensed Connecticut operations. In 2023, the company underwent a major restructuring: shareholders approved its cancellation from trading on AIM and re-registration as a private limited company, becoming Sportech Limited, effective December 2023. The company simultaneously downsized its UK operations and moved its primary place of business to the USA. In late 2023/early 2024, Sportech announced key management changes, including the appointments of a Group Chief Technology Officer, Group Chief Operating Officer, and Group Chief Commercial Officer, all drawn from the acquisition of LOT.TO. Its CEO Richard McGuire and CFO Tom Hearne were scheduled to depart in mid-2024, though as of October 2025 McGuire remained in post. Sportech continues to report cash capital distributions to shareholders and recently bolstered its board with three new non-executive directors experienced in global gaming and finance.
