Tatts Group Limited was an Australian gambling and wagering operator that played a central role in the country's regulated lottery and wagering markets. Formed in 2005 through the merger of Tattersall's Holdings and Jupiters Limited, the group traced its heritage to George Adams' Tattersall's lottery, which began in Sydney in 1881. At the time of its acquisition by Tabcorp Holdings in December 2017, Tatts Group operated state-licensed lotteries across Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory, ran the UBET retail and online wagering brand, and supplied electronic gaming machine monitoring and venue management technology to pubs and clubs. The company was headquartered in Brisbane and employed roughly 2,000 people. Its ASX-listed life ended when Tabcorp completed a merger that created Australia's largest listed gambling business; lottery operations later continued under Tabcorp and, from 2022, through The Lottery Corporation. For contemporary databases, Tatts Group is best treated as a legacy entity rather than a current operator.

Detailed Review

Formation and Heritage

Tatts Group Limited was created in 2005 when Tattersall's Holdings merged with Jupiters Limited. The new ASX-listed group, under the ticker TTS, combined Tattersall's long-running lottery business with Jupiters' gaming and entertainment interests. Tattersall's itself traced back to George Adams' Tattersall's lottery, established in Sydney in 1881, making the group one of the oldest names in Australian gambling before its eventual absorption into Tabcorp.

Business Model

The company was primarily a regulated gambling operator rather than an online-only business. Its lotteries division was the financial engine, operating under the Tatts and Golden Casket brands and holding state licences to run games such as TattsLotto, Oz Lotto, Powerball and Super66 across Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory. These games were sold through a large retail network of newsagents and licensed venues and generated high-margin, recurring revenue from a broad consumer base.

The wagering arm, UBET, offered fixed-odds horse racing and sports betting through online, mobile, phone and retail channels in Queensland and the Northern Territory. Although a significant regional wagering business, UBET faced intense competition from national digital bookmakers such as Sportsbet and BetEasy. In addition, Tatts operated keno in pubs and clubs and supplied electronic gaming machine monitoring, data, and cashless gaming systems to hotels and clubs through its gaming services division, making the group both a B2C operator and a B2B technology provider.

Market Position

Tatts Group was one of Australia's largest gambling companies, with dominant lottery licences in several states. Its wagering division, however, was under pressure from more agile online competitors, and its gaming services business faced a mature pubs and clubs market. The company's strategic value lay in the stability and cash generation of its lottery operations, which made it an attractive merger partner for Tabcorp.

Merger with Tabcorp

The merger with Tabcorp Holdings, announced in 2016 and completed in December 2017, was widely seen as a defensive move to create scale, capture synergies in wagering infrastructure, and strengthen both companies in a heavily regulated market. Regulatory reviews by the ACCC and other bodies eventually cleared the transaction, and Tatts Group shareholders received Tabcorp shares as part of the deal.

Legacy

Following completion of the merger, Tatts Group Limited was delisted from the ASX and ceased to exist as an independent entity. Its lottery assets formed part of Tabcorp's lotteries and gaming services divisions, and after Tabcorp demerged its lottery business in 2022, the underlying lottery operations continued through The Lottery Corporation. For modern business databases, Tatts Group is therefore best treated as a historical/legacy operating entity rather than an active company.
