History and Growth

Venable was founded in 1900 by Richard Venable, a law professor at the University of Maryland School of Law, who partnered with two of his former students to establish Venable, Baetjer & Howard in Baltimore. The firm grew steadily over the next century, building a reputation for litigation and corporate work in the Mid-Atlantic region. A transformative merger occurred in 1999 when Venable combined with Washington, D.C.–based Tucker Flyer, significantly expanding its regulatory and government affairs capabilities. In 2006, the firm opened a Los Angeles office, marking its first West Coast presence. Venable moved its headquarters to 600 Massachusetts Avenue in Washington, D.C. in 2017.

Major growth milestones include the 2018 acquisition of Fitzpatrick Cella, a 100-attorney New York intellectual property firm that added substantial patent litigation and prosecution depth. In January 2021, Venable opened a Chicago construction law office, described by Chairman Stuart Ingis as part of "measured, strategic growth through the addition of talented attorneys and practices in markets that support client needs." The firm expanded its Florida footprint in November 2022 through a merger with Genovese Joblove & Battista, adding offices in Miami, Tampa, and Fort Lauderdale. In January 2026, Venable relocated its Los Angeles office to Century City.

Key practice areas include corporate and business transactions (M&A, financing, venture capital, joint ventures, entity formation, and corporate governance); complex litigation (products liability, class action defense, commercial litigation, and white-collar defense); intellectual property (patent prosecution and litigation, trademark and copyright registration and enforcement, trade secrets, and IP licensing); privacy and data security (one of the oldest and largest practices in the nation, covering compliance counseling, incident response, crisis management, litigation defense, and legislative advocacy); government affairs (federal and state lobbying, legislative strategy, political law compliance, and coalition building); consumer products and services (integrated regulatory counsel covering FDA, FTC, NAD, and state attorney general matters); payments and fintech (regulatory compliance, licensing strategy, underwriting controls, and merchant services); and entertainment and sports (intellectual property and transactional support).

Industry Recognition and Financials

Venable has consistently ranked among the top law firms globally. In 2021, it was the 78th highest-grossing law firm worldwide, with total revenue of $717 million. By 2025, revenue rose to approximately $900 million. The firm's culture emphasizes pro bono work, with more than 30,000 pro bono hours logged in recent years. The Venable Foundation, funded annually by firm partners, has been recognized as one of the most charitable law firm foundations in the U.S.

Notable Alumni and Current Attorneys

Venable's alumni roster includes former U.S. Attorney General Benjamin R. Civiletti, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation James H. Burnley IV, former U.S. Senators Birch Bayh and John Marshall Butler, former Arkansas Governor and DEA Administrator Asa Hutchinson, and Doug Emhoff, former Managing Director of Venable's West Coast Offices and current Second Gentleman of the United States. Congressman Glenn F. Ivey (MD-4) also practiced at the firm.

Community and Philanthropy

The Venable Foundation focuses on eight areas: arts and culture, education, environment, health, human services, legal services, workforce development, and youth impact. In 2025, it awarded $1.5 million in grants to 159 organizations in the final quarter alone, bringing the year's total to $4.1 million distributed to 465 nonprofits.
