Meridian Holdings Chair William Scott discusses the strategic benefits of the recent rebrand, the company's proprietary technology edge, disciplined expansion in Malta and emerging markets, and how public-market discipline drives operational focus.

Almost six months after Golden Matrix Group rebranded to Meridian Holdings, the NASDAQ-listed firm is reporting strong momentum. In early May, the company posted its first profitable quarter under the new identity, with group revenue of $50.1m (up 17% year-on-year) and gross profit rising 16% to $28.1m.

Chair and Interim CEO William Scott told SBC News that the name change simply caught up with what the business had already become after the Meridianbet acquisition. He stressed that market understanding follows consistent delivery, not a new label.

Technology as a Differentiator

Scott emphasised that Meridian’s ownership of its entire technology stack is a core competitive advantage. "What takes longer to appreciate is what sits underneath: our own platform, our in-house development, our proprietary content, and a B2B distribution network," he said, adding that this B2B revenue stream is expected to become more prominent in coming quarters.

Owning the stack shortens the path from idea to deployment, he explained. A modular, multi-currency platform allows rapid localisation without rebuilding the system for each market. Proprietary content from Expanse Studios (already nearly 80 titles on over 1,500 active sites) creates a feedback loop: customer data informs product development, which is tested in-house and then distributed to third-party operators.

Selective Expansion and the Fairbet Deal

In February, Meridianbet acquired full control of Fairbet Ltd, making it Malta’s largest sportsbook operator. Scott highlighted that Malta’s retail regulatory regime is "properly restrictive," with only three licensed operators. "That kind of scarcity doesn't come along often," he said, noting that a prior technology partnership made the deal a natural conversion of an existing relationship.

The acquisition reflects Meridian’s M&A discipline: targets must add hard-to-build assets such as regulated licences, proprietary technology, or local distribution.

Regulatory Readiness and Emerging Markets

Scott argued that the company does not wait for rules to dictate integrity. "In every market we operate, we voluntarily hold ourselves to standards above the legal minimum," he said, adding that NASDAQ listing reinforces that discipline. The focus on affordable, event-based wagering aligns with global regulatory trends.

Regarding expansion into Brazil and Africa, Scott cautioned against treating new markets as a race. "The objective is to build durable, profitable positions in selected regulated markets, not to maximise the number of flags on a map," he said. Near-term priorities are deepening customer conversion and retention in existing markets rather than adding more countries.

Public-Company Discipline

Having reduced debt and returned to profitability, stronger balance sheet options do not lower return thresholds, according to Scott. Organic tech investment, particularly where execution risk is lower, remains important. Being publicly traded imposes valuable discipline: "SEC reporting, stronger financial controls, board oversight, and regular investor engagement all push you toward better decisions." He acknowledged that the diversified structure makes external classification harder, which the company is actively addressing.

Outlook and Industry Events

Looking ahead, Scott expects the SBC Summit in Lisbon (29 Sep–1 Oct) to focus on regulation shifting from a licensing checkbox to being embedded in product and marketing. He also sees applied AI for fraud detection and responsible gambling monitoring as the real conversation, alongside continued growth in Latin America and other emerging markets where Meridian is already focused.
