Myanmar Blocks Nearly 400,000 Phone Numbers in Gambling SMS Crackdown

Myanmar’s telecommunications regulator, the Posts and Telecommunications Department (PTD), has escalated its campaign against gambling-related SMS spam, permanently blocking 390,978 phone numbers as of June 30, 2026. The department reported working alongside licensed mobile operators to identify and stop promotional text messages tied to illegal gambling activities.

The enforcement relies on automated SMS monitoring systems. Under the framework, a message is flagged as abnormal if the same content is sent from a single number to 60 recipients within an hour or to 1,000 recipients over 24 hours. Once these thresholds are breached, operators’ SMS firewalls automatically block the messages, cutting off mass promotional campaigns without affecting ordinary person-to-person texts.

Authorities emphasized that the system targets large-scale spam operations rather than individual communications, enabling swift disruption of illegal gambling networks. The latest figures underline the scale of the initiative, with hundreds of thousands of numbers now permanently barred from sending messages via licensed networks.

In addition to automated detection, the PTD is calling on the public to help identify overlooked cases. Mobile users who receive unsolicited gambling invitations or promotions are encouraged to email the originating phone numbers to the department, allowing officials to investigate beyond what the automated systems catch.

These measures reflect a broader push by Myanmar’s telecommunications authorities to tighten oversight of its mobile infrastructure and curb the use of licensed networks for unlawful promotional content. By combining technical filters with citizen reporting, the PTD seeks to further reduce gambling SMS campaigns while shielding consumers from unwanted messages linked to illicit operations.
