A trial has begun in Punta Arenas over allegations of an illegal casino, with the defendant accused of operating without a license following complaints from regulators and a rival operator. The court is now weighing evidence before delivering a verdict.
A criminal trial has commenced in Chile concerning the alleged operation of an illegal casino in the downtown area of Punta Arenas. The defendant stands accused of running a gambling establishment from a commercial property without the necessary licenses required under Chilean law.
The case stems from an investigation launched in May 2022, triggered by complaints from both the Superintendency of Gambling Casinos and Casino Dreams Punta Arenas, a licensed operator in the city. During the probe, authorities conducted inspections that led to the property being shut down on three separate occasions for non-compliance with gambling regulations.
The Public Prosecutor's Office has argued in court that the venue operated outside the legal authorizations and regulatory and tax framework governing licensed casinos in Chile. Representatives of Casino Dreams Punta Arenas also testified, outlining what they described as the economic and social harm caused by unregulated gambling and stressing the need to enforce existing regulatory requirements.
Proceedings had previously stalled when the defendant failed to appear for a formalization hearing, prompting a detention order. He later presented himself voluntarily, accompanied by legal counsel, allowing the trial to proceed. With closing arguments and evidence now submitted, the Oral Criminal Court must review the case file before delivering a verdict and, if applicable, a sentence.
Separately, Casino Dreams continues to face a regulatory challenge in Chile regarding its planned Talca casino project. An environmental appeal remains unresolved, though the company is moving forward with construction ahead of a scheduled opening in November 2026.
