Brett Humphrey

Brett Humphrey is a judge of the Federal Court of Australia, based in Adelaide. He sits in the Court's South Australia registry and handles the broad range of federal jurisdiction that comes before it, including commercial, regulatory and administrative matters.
Humphrey is the judicial officer who decided the AUSTRAC civil penalty case against SkyCity Adelaide Pty Ltd. In June 2024 he ordered SkyCity Adelaide to pay an AU$21 million penalty for breaches of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act, accepting that the casino's historical compliance systems were seriously deficient and that the penalty needed to reflect the seriousness of the contraventions.
Before his appointment to the Federal Court, Humphrey had prior judicial service in Australia's federal circuit court system and earlier worked as a barrister in South Australia. His professional background before the bench was substantially built in South Australia, where he developed the regulatory and public law experience reflected in his later judicial work.
