Dana Nessel

Dana Nessel is the 54th Attorney General of Michigan, first elected in 2018 and re-elected in 2022. She is the first openly LGBTQ person elected to statewide office in Michigan and the first Jewish person to hold the position of Attorney General in the state.

Before entering public office, Nessel worked as an assistant prosecutor in Wayne County for 11 years, handling over 1,665 felony cases. In 2005, she co‑founded Nessel & Kessel Law, a private practice focused on criminal defense, civil rights, family law, and tort litigation. She gained national prominence in 2014 as the *lead attorney for plaintiffs in DeBoer v. Snyder**, the case that successfully challenged Michigan’s ban on same‑sex marriage, culminating in the U.S. Supreme Court’s Obergefell v. Hodges* decision.

As Attorney General, Nessel actively regulates Michigan’s online gambling and sports betting markets. She has threatened prosecution of unlicensed operators, filed lawsuits to block unlicensed sports‑wagering platforms such as Kalshi, and works closely with the Michigan Gaming Control Board to enforce state gambling laws and protect consumers.
