Eduardo Cavaliere

Eduardo Cavaliere is a Brazilian politician and lawyer currently serving as the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, a role he assumed on March 20, 2026 at the age of 31, making him the youngest mayor in the city's history. He previously served as vice-mayor under Eduardo Paes and held several key secretarial positions within the Paes administration. His background combines environmental policy, public administration, and state-level legislative experience.

Cavaliere first entered public office as a state deputy in the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro from 2019 to 2021, where he focused on environmental and urban issues. He then joined the city government as Secretary for the Environment in 2021, leading initiatives on climate resilience and green urban planning. In 2022, he was promoted to Chief Secretary of the Casa Civil (Civil House), overseeing interdepartmental coordination and major city projects.

While serving as acting mayor during Eduardo Paes' travels in August 2025, Cavaliere issued a decree banning electronic gaming machines (VLTs) and later prohibited advertising of sports betting and gambling in public spaces. This move was part of a broader effort to regulate gambling and protect public health. His administration emphasizes continuity with the previous Paes government while pursuing independent initiatives in sustainability and public order.
