Gideon Salutin

Gideon Salutin serves as the Chief Economist at the Social Market Foundation (SMF), a position he assumed in March 2026 after joining the organization as a researcher in 2022. In this role, he spearheads the SMF's economic research initiatives, focusing on fostering inclusive growth across the UK. His extensive research portfolio also encompasses pensions, transport, housing, labor markets, public services, investment, poverty, technology, and wellbeing.

Salutin's work has significantly contributed to policy discussions around the iGaming and gambling industry. He has authored and co-authored several reports for the SMF advocating for reforms in gambling taxation, including arguments for raising Machine Games Duty on Category B machines due to their harmful impact and proposing increased taxes on online casino gaming. His analysis highlights the fiscal costs associated with gambling harm and the potential for tax reforms to generate revenue and reduce social harm. He has also participated in panel events discussing these issues, speaking alongside MPs and clinical advisors on gambling harms.

Before his tenure at the SMF, Salutin gained experience working in Canada for the Max Bell School of Public Policy and le Centre International pour la Prévention de la Criminalité. He has made numerous media appearances, featuring in prominent outlets such as the BBC, The Guardian, The Times, and the Financial Times. Salutin also co-authored the book Gideon's Bible: A Father and Son discuss God, the Bible, and Life. He holds an MSc in International Social and Public Policy from the London School of Economics and a BA Hons in Economic Development and History from McGill University.
