Michael Rubin

Founder and CEO of Fanatics

Michael Rubin is a prominent American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and social justice advocate, widely recognized as the Founder and CEO of Fanatics, a global digital sports platform. Born on July 21, 1972, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Rubin demonstrated his entrepreneurial spirit from a young age, starting a ski-tuning business from his parents' basement at twelve, which evolved into Mike's Ski and Sport stores by age fourteen. He briefly attended Villanova University but dropped out to focus on his burgeoning business interests.

Rubin's early career saw him establish KPR Sports in 1993, which achieved $50 million in sales by 1995. In 1998, he founded Global Sports Interactive, later rebranded as GSI Commerce, an e-commerce pioneer providing online sales platforms for major retailers. He successfully built GSI Commerce to service 150 of the top 500 internet retailers before selling it to eBay in 2011 for $2.4 billion. As part of this deal, Rubin repurchased several assets eBay didn't want, including Fanatics, Rue La La, and ShopRunner, laying the groundwork for his future endeavors.

Under Rubin's leadership, Fanatics has transformed into a sports empire, expanding beyond licensed merchandise into physical and digital trading cards and collectibles (acquiring Topps in 2022), sports betting, iGaming, and live events. Fanatics Betting & Gaming, launched in 2022, leverages Fanatics' extensive database of over 100 million fans and has quickly become a significant player in the sports betting market. The company was valued at $31 billion by private investors in 2022 and expects approximately $13 billion in revenue in 2026.

Beyond his business ventures, Rubin is a dedicated philanthropist and advocate for criminal justice reform. He is the co-founder and co-chair of the REFORM Alliance, an organization committed to eradicating antiquated probation laws. He also spearheaded the ALL IN Challenge in 2020, which raised over $60 million for COVID-19 relief efforts, making it one of the largest digital fundraisers ever. Rubin was also a minority partner in the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils for over a decade, selling his stakes in 2022 to fully concentrate on Fanatics' expansion.
