Sandro Tonali
Midfielder for Newcastle United and the Italy national team
Sandro Tonali came through Brescia Calcio's youth system and made his senior debut in August 2017 in Serie B at age 17. He was a driving force in Brescia's 2018–19 Serie B title win and promotion to Serie A.
In September 2020 he joined AC Milan on loan with an obligation to buy, and he won the Serie A title in 2021–22, Milan's first in 11 years. He transferred to Newcastle United in July 2023 for a reported €70 million, then the club's record signing.
His Newcastle career was interrupted in October 2023 when the Italian Football Federation imposed a 10-month worldwide ban after he admitted betting on football matches, including matches involving his then-club AC Milan, through illegal platforms. The sanction included a €20,000 fine and a therapeutic/rehabilitation plan for his gambling disorder, and it caused him to miss the rest of Newcastle's 2023–24 season and Italy's Euro 2024 campaign. He returned to competitive action in late August 2024 and has since resumed his midfield role at Newcastle and for Italy.
