Subramonian Shankar

Subramonian Shankar earned a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 1971. He worked briefly at Tata Electric Companies in Bombay before studying at the University of New Brunswick, where he received an MSc in Electrical Engineering in 1976. After stints at an EMR Telemetry firm in Florida and at MMC Digital Systems in Calcutta, he moved to the U.S. and co-founded American Megatrends Inc. (AMI) in 1985.

AMI became the world’s leading BIOS/UEFI firmware provider and pioneered motherboard design, server management, and storage controllers. Shankar served as its President and CEO until 2019, when he spun off several product lines into AmZetta Technologies, where he continues as President and CEO. He also established the Lakshan Foundation and has funded research centers in diabetes at Emory University and IIT Madras. He received an honorary Doctor of Science from UNB in 2025 and the IIT Madras Distinguished Alumnus Award.
