Tadeu Marroco
Chief Executive of British American Tobacco, leading the company’s transformation toward a ‘smokeless world’ through reduced-risk nicotine products.
Tadeu Marroco is the Chief Executive of British American Tobacco PLC (BAT), a role he assumed in May 2023. He is leading the company’s strategic pivot from traditional cigarettes toward a portfolio of reduced-risk nicotine products, including vapes, heated tobacco, and oral nicotine pouches, under the ambition of building a ‘smokeless world.’ Marroco has overseen significant restructuring efforts, including a global workforce reduction driven by AI and automation, as BAT seeks to adapt to evolving regulatory landscapes and declining smoking rates.
Marroco began his career at BAT in 1992 at its Brazilian subsidiary, where he spent his early years in various national and regional roles. He moved through the ranks to hold positions across Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East, gaining deep experience in commercial operations, business development, and transformation. In 2014, he joined the BAT Management Board as Business Development Director, later serving as Regional Director for Europe and North Africa.
Subsequently, Marroco became Director of Group Transformation, where he was responsible for streamlining operations and driving efficiency. He then served as Deputy Finance Director from March 2019 before being appointed Finance Director in August 2019, a position he held for nearly four years. His financial stewardship included navigating the company through the COVID-19 pandemic and overseeing major capital allocation decisions. His promotion to CEO followed the departure of his predecessor, Jack Bowles, and reflects the board’s confidence in his operational and strategic capabilities.
Marroco holds a degree from the COPPEAD Institute at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in Brazil. He is based in Greater London, where BAT is headquartered. Throughout his career, he has emphasized the importance of innovation and sustainability in the tobacco industry, advocating for science-backed alternatives to smoking. His leadership is marked by a focus on long-term shareholder value and corporate responsibility in a highly regulated sector.
