Ebac Ltd. is a family-owned British manufacturer headquartered in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, that has built a reputation as a vertically integrated producer of dehumidifiers, water coolers, washing machines, and air-source heat pumps. Founded in 1973 by John Elliott MBE, the company began by making industrial dehumidifiers for the UK construction sector and over five decades has become the UK’s only domestic washing machine manufacturer and Europe’s leading water cooler producer. In 2011, Elliott placed the company into the Ebac Foundation, a trust that prohibits any sale or relocation of the business, ensuring all profits are reinvested and local jobs remain protected permanently. Ebac holds more than 70 global patents and employs around 250 people at its single factory in County Durham, where all core products continue to be made. Its washing machine line, launched in 2015–2016, marked the first full UK-based production of washing machines since the closure of the Hotpoint/Indesit plant in 2009. The company’s foundation ownership model and commitment to British manufacturing set it apart in an industry where production has largely moved overseas.
