Ebac was founded in 1973 by John Elliott MBE, who took an initial order from Bovis Homes in 1972 while working from a garden shed in County Durham. Elliott’s first product was an industrial dehumidifier designed for the construction market, and the company grew steadily by supplying the UK building and hire sectors. By the early 2000s, Ebac had expanded into water coolers and later into domestic dehumidifiers, becoming a household name in the UK. The most transformative event came in 2011, when Elliott gifted the entire company into the Ebac Foundation, a trust that legally prevents the business from being sold or relocated from County Durham. This structure ensures that all profits are reinvested into the company, its staff, and the local community, rather than being distributed to external shareholders.

Ebac is a niche player in the UK domestic appliance market, distinguished by its British manufacturing base and foundation ownership. It is the only washing machine maker still producing fully in the UK, competing against imported brands from Europe and Asia. In dehumidifiers, it is a market leader in the UK and Europe, while in water coolers it is Europe’s largest manufacturer.
