Origins and Founding

Binion's Gambling Hall traces its origins to 1951, when Lester 'Benny' Binion opened Binion's Horseshoe at 128 Fremont Street, on the corner of Fremont and First in downtown Las Vegas. The property was built around a gambling philosophy that was unusually bold for its time: no maximum wagers, an open invitation to high rollers, and a floor display of one million dollars in hundred-dollar bills. That cash-display tradition became one of the casino's best-known symbols and helped establish Binion's as a serious, high-action gambling house.

World Series of Poker

In 1970, Benny Binion staged the first World Series of Poker at the Horseshoe, bringing together some of the country's most prominent card players. The event grew over the following decades into the most important tournament in professional poker, and Binion's remained its headquarters for more than three decades. The tournament's growth helped cement downtown Las Vegas, and Binion's specifically, as a place where the largest stakes in poker could be found.

Family Era and Sale to Harrah's

After Benny Binion's death in 1989, the property entered a turbulent period. The Binion family faced legal troubles, and Benny's son Ted Binion died in 1998. Another son, Jack Binion, consolidated control of the family's casino interests and eventually sold Binion's Horseshoe and related Horseshoe-branded properties to Harrah's Entertainment in 2004 in a deal valued at more than $1 billion. Harrah's subsequently shifted the WSOP to the Rio and retained the Binion's name for the downtown property, while also developing the Horseshoe brand in other markets.

TLC Ownership and Decline

In 2008, Harrah's Entertainment sold the downtown Las Vegas Binion's to TLC Casino Enterprises, a company controlled by Terry Caudill. Harrah's corporate successor later became Caesars Entertainment. The TLC years were marked by limited capital investment, and the physically aging property lost much of its former prominence on the downtown market. Still, Binion's retained a loyal following, particularly among players who preferred its old-school, low-limit-friendly atmosphere to the production-style casinos on the Las Vegas Strip.

Cerca Hotels and Tom Breitling

Binion's changed hands again in August 2021, when Cerca Hotels LLC, founded by Tom Breitling, acquired the property. Breitling is a Las Vegas technology entrepreneur and former co-owner of the Golden Nugget, and his ownership group immediately committed to a multi-year renovation of the hotel rooms and public spaces. The renovation has aimed to refresh the property while preserving its vintage neon signage and early-Vegas character rather than replacing it with a contemporary mega-casino look.

Current Products and Amenities

Today the casino floor includes hundreds of slot machines and video poker terminals, as well as table games including blackjack, craps and roulette. The hotel has 366 rooms across 24 floors, and Binion's Ranch Steakhouse occupies the top floor with views over the Fremont Street Experience. Binion's Café provides round-the-clock casual dining. A retail sportsbook using the Boomers Sportsbook brand was reported by Global Gaming Insider to be debuting at both Binion's and the adjacent Four Queens, giving the property a contemporary sports betting presence alongside its traditional gaming offerings.

Business Model and Market Position

Binion's operates as a classic land-based casino and hotel, earning revenue from gaming, hotel rooms, restaurant and bar sales and player loyalty programs. Its location inside the Fremont Street Experience makes it part of one of Las Vegas's most heavily visited pedestrian areas, and the casino draws both tourists exploring downtown and Las Vegas locals looking for lower table minimums and more traditional table-game service. Its historical association with the WSOP also gives it an enduring identity in poker culture that few other properties can match, even though the WSOP itself is now owned by Caesars Entertainment and no longer held on Fremont Street.

Legacy and Outlook

Binion's remains one of downtown Las Vegas's most recognizable properties and a symbol of the city's pre-corporate gambling era. Under Cerca Hotels' ownership, the focus has been on restoring the property's physical quality while leaning into the heritage of the Binion family and the World Series of Poker. The renovation program, combined with the new sportsbook and the constant foot traffic of the Fremont Street Experience, positions Binion's as a key player in the ongoing revival of downtown Las Vegas.
