History

GCI was founded in 1979 by technology entrepreneur Ron Duncan in a small apartment in Anchorage’s Bootleggers Cove neighborhood as a long-distance telephone reseller. The company incorporated in Alaska in 1982, co-founded by Bob Walp and Duncan, and carried its first long-distance call on Thanksgiving Day that year. Over the following decades, GCI expanded into mobile, internet, and business services, building a hybrid network that includes terrestrial fiber, microwave links, and satellite backhaul. Today, the company serves over 200 Alaska communities, from major cities like Anchorage to remote villages.

In April 2026, GCI announced a $310 million deal to acquire Quintillion, a subsea and terrestrial fiber provider, merging Quintillion’s 1,800 miles of existing fiber with GCI’s 1,500 miles of planned expansion into a self-healing ring architecture.
