MGM Grand Inc. was a pioneering American gaming and hospitality company founded by legendary businessman Kirk Kerkorian. Incorporated in 1980 as a spin-off from the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio, the company was created to own and operate the original MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, which opened in 1973 as the largest hotel in the world. Over the subsequent two decades, MGM Grand Inc. grew into one of the most dominant forces on the Las Vegas Strip, developing or acquiring landmark properties including the MGM Grand Las Vegas (the current megaresort opened in 1993), The Mirage, Bellagio, and Treasure Island. The company was known for its grand-scale resort designs, high-limit gaming, and integrated entertainment offerings. In 2010, under the leadership of then-CEO Jim Murren, the company rebranded as MGM Resorts International to reflect its global expansion and diversified portfolio beyond the historic MGM Grand brand. Today, as MGM Resorts International, the company is the largest casino operator in the world by revenue, with 31 properties across the U.S. and Macau, but its corporate DNA originates from the MGM Grand Inc. entity.
Detailed Review
MGM Grand Inc. was established in 1980 when Kirk Kerkorian orchestrated the breakup of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer into two separate companies: one holding the film studio and the other holding the hotel and casino operations. The hotel/casino entity retained the MGM Grand name and took over the original MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas (which later became Bally's Las Vegas). The company's most transformative project was the construction of the current MGM Grand Las Vegas, which opened in 1993 as the largest single hotel in the United States with over 5,000 rooms. Throughout the 1990s, MGM Grand Inc. pursued an aggressive expansion strategy, acquiring Mirage Resorts in 2000 (adding Bellagio, The Mirage, and Treasure Island) and later Mandalay Resort Group in 2005. These acquisitions transformed the company from a single property operator into a multi-brand gaming conglomerate. The company was also an early innovator in non-gaming amenities, installing the MGM Grand Adventures Theme Park (later removed) and pioneering the "entertainment complex" model with shows like "O" at Bellagio and a permanent Cirque du Soleil presence. Financially, MGM Grand Inc. went public on the New York Stock Exchange (ticker MGM) and became a bellwether for the Las Vegas economy. Its name change in 2010 to MGM Resorts International marked the end of the MGM Grand Inc. corporate identity, though the MGM Grand brand continues as a flagship resort within the MGM Resorts portfolio.
