History and Development

MGM National Harbor opened on December 8, 2016, after a $1.4 billion investment by MGM Resorts International. The resort was developed within the mixed-use National Harbor development on the banks of the Potomac River, a location selected to capture the Washington, D.C. metropolitan market. Designed by HKS Hospitality Group, the architecture emphasizes waterfront heritage with a glass-enclosed atrium offering views of the Washington Monument. The property holds a Maryland video lottery facility license and is subject to state gaming regulations.

The casino floor spans 125,000 square feet, making it one of the largest in the mid-Atlantic region. It offers over 2,300 slot machines, 100 table games including blackjack, roulette, craps, and baccarat, and a 22-table poker room. High-limit gaming areas cater to VIP players. The on-site BetMGM Sportsbook lounge allows guests to wager on live sports and horse racing via BetMGM terminals, integrating the property with MGM Resorts' digital sports betting platform. The MGM Rewards loyalty program ties gaming, hotel, dining, and entertainment across all MGM properties.

The Theater is a 3,000-seat state-of-the-art venue hosting concerts, comedy acts, and boxing events, with past performers including major touring artists. The Conservatory features seasonal floral and design exhibits that change multiple times a year. Dining is a major draw, with eight on-site restaurants and bars. Signature concepts include Fish by José Andrés (seafood), MARCUS by Marcus Samuelsson (American comfort food), and Voltaggio Brothers Steak House (dry-aged steaks). More casual options include the National Market food hall, a coffee shop, and several bars and lounges. The Spa & Salon offers treatments, a steam room, sauna, and fitness center, while the outdoor pool deck with cabanas provides seasonal relaxation.

Community and Economic Impact

Since opening, MGM National Harbor has generated significant economic impact in Prince George’s County, including over $5 million in community donations and 21,000+ volunteer hours. The MGM National Harbor Local Impact Grant provides ongoing contributions to local organizations. The resort employs over 1,500 full-time workers and is one of the largest private employers in the area. Business travelers and groups can access 25,000 square feet of meeting and event space, including a ballroom.
