SJM Resorts, S.A. (trading as SJM Resorts) is the principal subsidiary of SJM Holdings Limited (HKEx: 880) and one of the six casino concessionaires in Macau. Rooted in Macau for more than six decades through the legacy of its late founder Dr. Stanley Ho, the company owns, operates, and develops premier integrated entertainment resorts that combine casino gaming with luxury hospitality, fine dining, retail, wellness, and MICE facilities. SJM Resorts is the only local-born concessionaire, holding a direct gaming concession from the Macau government. The company’s portfolio includes flagship properties such as the Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau—a Cotai integrated resort featuring three branded hotel towers (Grand Lisboa Palace Macau, THE KARL LAGERFELD, and Palazzo Versace Macau)—as well as the iconic Grand Lisboa Macau hotel and casino, Casino Lisboa, Casino Oceanus at Jai Alai, and L’Arc Hotel and Casino. It also holds a majority stake in Ponte 16 Resort, Macau, and manages the Jai Alai Hotel. SJM Resorts caters to a broad spectrum of patrons, from mass-market visitors to high-end VIP gamers, and continues to invest in non-gaming attractions to support Macau’s economic diversification.

Detailed Review

History and Concession

SJM Resorts operates as the de facto operating arm of SJM Holdings, which was first awarded a gaming concession in 2002 when Macau liberalised its casino market. The company’s historical roots trace back to 1962 when Dr. Stanley Ho’s Sociedade de Turismo e Diversões de Macau (STDM) secured the monopoly gaming concession that lasted until 2002. SJM Resorts today holds a 10-year gaming concession (2023–2033) granted by the Macau SAR Government.

Property Portfolio

The company’s flagship Cotai integrated resort is the Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau, comprising 1,892 rooms and suites across three luxury hotels, extensive gaming floors, the Grand Lisboa Palace casino, and diverse F&B, retail, and event spaces. Other properties include the iconic Grand Lisboa Macau (431 rooms), Casino Lisboa (one of the oldest casinos in Macau), Casino Oceanus at Jai Alai, L’Arc Hotel and Casino (283 rooms), Ponte 16 Resort (51% owned, includes Sofitel Macau with 389 rooms and 19 VIP mansions), and Jai Alai Hotel (132 rooms).

Gaming and Non-Gaming Services

SJM offers all forms of casino gaming (table games, slot machines, electronic gaming), plus hotel accommodation, fine and casual dining (including MICHELIN-starred and Black Pearl-recognised restaurants), retail, wellness and spa, and MICE facilities. The company runs a loyalty programme, the SJM Supreme Card, and operates an art and culture platform (art.sjmresorts.com).

Recent Developments and Strategy

In December 2023, SJM Resorts appointed Ben Toh Hup Hock, formerly CFO, as its new Chief Operating Officer. The company has been restructuring its satellite casino operations, with a plan to fully phase out satellite casinos by the end of 2025. In 2026, SJM acquired the L’Arc Casino for HKD 1.75 billion while dropping plans to take over Ponte 16. SJM also became the first Macau-based member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) in June 2026.

Financial Context

SJM Holdings reported a turnaround in 2025 results, with phased cessation of satellite casinos completed. The group continues to benefit from the recovery of Macau’s tourism and gaming market. As of 2024, STDM held 61.91% of SJM Holdings shares.
