History

S.S. Lazio was founded on 9 January 1900 in Rome as Società Podistica Lazio by Luigi Bigiarelli, his brother Giacomo, and seven others. The club's original white and sky blue colours were chosen to pay homage to ancient Greece. It is one of the oldest football clubs in Italy and has spent most of its history in the top flight. Lazio won its first Italian championship in 1974 and its second Scudetto in 2000, along with seven Coppa Italia titles and five Supercoppa Italiana. In 2004, after financial difficulties, Claudio Lotito bought the club and remains its president and majority shareholder.
