The Boring Company

Origins and Early History

The Boring Company began in December 2016, when Elon Musk announced the venture on Twitter with the promise of tunnelling to escape Los Angeles traffic. The name is a deliberate double pun on construction boring and the idea of being bored. The company was initially incubated inside SpaceX before becoming a standalone business around 2021. Early financing was partly raised through novelty merchandise, including 50,000 branded caps and the 2018 Not-a-Flamethrower, and a proof-of-concept test tunnel was completed in Hawthorne, California, in 2019. Ambitious proposals for Chicago and the Washington DC-Baltimore corridor were later abandoned, while the first genuine commercial contract came in 2019 when the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority selected the company to build a transit system at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Las Vegas and the Vegas Loop

The LVCC Loop opened in June 2021 with three underground stations connected by twin tunnels, carrying convention-goers free of charge in Teslas. The system quickly won local approval for expansion into the Vegas Loop, a citywide network planned to reach dozens of Strip properties, downtown Las Vegas, UNLV, Allegiant Stadium and Harry Reid International Airport. Station openings have been phased: Resorts World was the first casino-resort served, followed by Westgate and Encore in late 2024, and a new station at Sahara Las Vegas opened in August 2026. That Sahara opening was reported by iGaming trade publication Yogonet, which is the coverage context that brought the company into this database.

Technology and Business Model

The company's core hardware is the Prufrock family of tunnel-boring machines, manufactured at its Bastrop, Texas, facility. Prufrock machines are designed to launch from the surface, advance quickly toward a target of about one mile per week, and avoid the large underground caverns traditionally required for TBM retrieval. The Loop product itself uses unmodified Tesla vehicles driving through approximately 13-foot-diameter single-lane tunnels. Revenue comes primarily from design-and-build contracts for Loop systems, supplemented by merchandise sales and experimental products such as Boring Bricks, interlocking blocks made from recycled tunnel spoil. The company also ran the annual Not-a-Boring Competition to push outside engineering teams toward faster, cheaper tunnelling.

Funding, Valuation and Leadership

In April 2022 The Boring Company raised $675 million in a round led by Vy Capital, with participation from Sequoia Capital, Valor Equity Partners and Founders Fund, at a valuation of roughly $5.675 billion. Elon Musk has remained founder and CEO throughout, and Steve Davis, a longtime SpaceX executive, has served as president. The company has never published a precise headcount, but press and LinkedIn estimates place it in the range of 200 to 400 employees.

Market Position and Reception

Las Vegas remains The Boring Company's only operating deployment. Casino operators and local officials have generally welcomed the Loop because it was delivered faster and at lower cost than conventional rail alternatives, and because the rides provide a novel visitor experience. Transit planners and urbanists, however, have questioned the system's passenger capacity, emergency-exit arrangements, permitting and regulatory oversight. Several non-Las Vegas proposals, including Chicago and Washington DC-Baltimore, collapsed, leaving the Vegas Loop as the company's principal proof case.

iGaming Context

The Boring Company is not an iGaming supplier. Its appearance in an iGaming database reflects the fact that the Vegas Loop's station network exists mainly to connect Las Vegas hotel-casinos, making station openings at properties such as Sahara Las Vegas newsworthy to gambling-industry trade outlets like Yogonet. The company's role in that ecosystem is as a transportation provider serving casino resorts.
