Tipico Co. Ltd. is a leading European sports betting and online casino operator founded in 2004 in Malta by three university students—Dieter Pawlik, Oliver Voigt, and Mladen Pavlovic. Headquartered in St. Julian’s, Malta, the company has grown from a single betting shop into Germany’s undisputed market leader, holding a sports betting concession from the Darmstadt Regional Council and a Malta Gaming Authority licence. Tipico operates more than 1,250 franchised retail betting shops across Germany and Austria alongside a high-volume digital platform that processes millions of bets in real time. The company is majority-owned by CVC Capital Partners (since 2016) and employs approximately 1,800 people directly. In October 2025, Banijay Group agreed to acquire a majority stake in Tipico, merging it with Betclic to create Banijay Gaming; the transaction closed in April 2026, with Mate Bacic appointed as CEO. Tipico’s product portfolio includes the Tipico Sportsbook, Tipico Casino, and the Admiral retail brand, and it is known for its strong partnerships with the Bundesliga and other major sports leagues.
Detailed Review
History and Corporate Development
Tipico was founded in 2004 in Malta by Dieter Pawlik, Oliver Voigt, and Mladen Pavlovic. The company started with a single betting shop and gradually expanded its retail presence across Germany and Austria. By the mid-2010s, Tipico had become the leading sports betting provider in Germany, overtaking competitors through aggressive retail expansion, a strong brand presence including sponsorship deals with FC Bayern Munich, Hamburger SV, and the Austrian Bundesliga, and a prominent advertising campaign featuring former footballer Oliver Kahn. In 2016, CVC Capital Partners acquired a majority stake in Tipico, leading to the appointment of Joachim Baca as CEO. Under Baca’s leadership (2016–2024), the company modernised its technology stack, obtained the first German sports betting concession in 2020, and cemented a market share of over 50% in Germany. In June 2024, Tipico sold its US sportsbook and casino technology platform to LeoVegas, an MGM Resorts subsidiary, effectively exiting the US market as a technology provider while retaining its European core business.
Acquisition by Banijay Group (2025–2026)
On 28 October 2025, Banijay Group announced a binding agreement to acquire a majority stake in Tipico from CVC and the founders, combining it with Betclic (already owned by Banijay) to create Banijay Gaming. The enterprise value of Tipico was set at €4.6 billion. The transaction closed on 23 April 2026. Under the new structure, Nicolas Béraud (Betclic founder) became Chairman of Banijay Gaming, Joachim Baca became Vice-Chairman, and Mate Bacic was appointed CEO of Tipico, succeeding Axel Hefer. Banijay Gaming now operates three leading brands (Betclic, Tipico, Admiral) across six regulated markets, serving 6.5 million unique active players annually.

The Tipico Retail Network consists of more than 1,250 franchised betting shops in Germany and Austria, providing over-the-counter sports betting and self-service terminals. The Admiral brand is associated with land-based gaming terminals and betting shops in Austria, part of the Tipico Group portfolio. Prior to June 2024, Tipico also operated a US mobile sportsbook in New Jersey and Colorado, but that platform was sold to LeoVegas.
