History

UNLV’s origins date to 1951 when the University of Nevada, Reno established an extension program in Las Vegas, holding classes in dressing rooms of the local high school auditorium. Under pressure from state assemblywoman Maude Frazier, the Nevada Board of Regents acquired an 80‑acre parcel on Maryland Parkway, and Frazier Hall opened on September 10, 1957. The school operated under UNR’s control until it was renamed Nevada Southern University in 1965 and finally became UNLV in 1969, achieving equal status with its northern counterpart. This journey from a dusty outpost to a thriving urban research university reflects community drive and institutional ambition.

Academics and Research

Today, UNLV is classified as an R1 doctoral university by the Carnegie Foundation. In fiscal year 2018, it spent $83 million on research and development, and it continues to expand through interdisciplinary institutes such as the Creative Media, Entertainment, and Cultural Industries Interdisciplinary Research Development Area. The academic structure includes ten colleges and schools, among them the William S. Boyd School of Law (Nevada’s only law school), the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine, the School of Dental Medicine, the Lee Business School, the College of Engineering, and the William F. Harrah College of Hospitality. UNLV also operates a vibrant Honors College and a growing array of online and hybrid programs through UNLV Online.

Economic and Community Role

UNLV is a major economic engine for Southern Nevada, employing over 4,000 faculty and staff and supporting thousands of additional jobs through operations, construction, and community outreach. The university’s brand integration and marketing efforts are led by a Chief Marketing Officer, and its digital transformation is overseen by a Vice President for Digital Transformation and CIO. In 2026, Chris Viton was appointed Vice President for Business Affairs and CFO, returning from the Nevada System of Higher Education to manage capital financing and debt. The university’s “Top Tier 2.0” strategic plan aims to elevate national standing, research output, and student experience.

Leadership and Strategy

The institution is governed by a president (currently interim Dr. Christopher L. Heavey) and an executive committee. Athletics

UNLV’s athletics program is a significant part of its identity. The Rebels field 17 NCAA Division I teams, and the men’s basketball program is one of the most storied in college sports, having won the national championship in 1990. The university operates an e‑commerce site for merchandise (UNLVgear.com) and partners with the Mountain West Conference on the MW+ streaming platform.
