European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA)Maarten Haijer is the Secretary General of the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA), the Brussels-based trade association representing Europe's largest regulated online gambling operators. In this role since at least February 2014, he leads the association's advocacy for a well-regulated, safe, and competitive online gambling market across the European Union.
Before joining EGBA as Director for Regulatory Affairs, Haijer served as Internal Market and Consumer Protection Counsellor at the Permanent Representation of the Netherlands to the EU. Prior to that, he held several positions within the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, focusing on EU and WTO trade policy issues. His background in EU policy and consumer protection informs his work in shaping responsible gambling standards.
Under Haijer's leadership, EGBA has launched initiatives such as European Safer Gambling Week, promoting safer gambling practices across the industry. He frequently speaks at industry events and engages with policymakers to advance harmonized regulation and sustainable growth in the European online gambling sector.
