GVC Holdings (now Entain)

History

Entain began in 2004 as GVC Holdings, incorporated in Douglas, Isle of Man, and initially listed on London's AIM market. It acted as a consolidator of online gambling brands, taking over Sportingbet's non-Australian operations in 2013 before completing the acquisition of bwin.party Digital Entertainment in 2015-16. That deal brought bwin, partypoker, PartyCasino and Foxy Bingo under one roof and made GVC a global force in online sports betting, casino, poker and bingo. The group's next major move was the 2018 acquisition of Ladbrokes Coral, which added one of the UK and Ireland's largest retail betting-shop networks to its online estate and lifted the company into the FTSE 100.

Rebrand and Strategy

In December 2020, GVC renamed itself Entain plc, choosing a name intended to reflect entertainment and 'gaining' rather than the initials of a holding company. The rebrand coincided with a stronger public focus on responsible gambling, and Entain adopted a sustainability charter to raise safer-gambling standards across the industry. It also repositioned itself as a technology-led entertainment group, with an in-house proprietary sportsbook and gaming platform supporting its consumer brands.

Business Model

Entain generates revenue through online sports betting, casino, poker, bingo and retail betting shops. Its online division operates mainly under market-leading consumer brands, while the UK and Ireland retail estate consists of Ladbrokes and Coral betting shops. The company has expanded into regulated international markets and increasingly prioritises markets with clear regulation rather than grey or unregulated territories. The U.S. market is a central growth driver through BetMGM, the 50/50 joint venture with MGM Resorts International.

Products and Brands

Key products include Ladbrokes and Coral, which are both retail and online brands; bwin, the flagship European online sportsbook and casino; partypoker, one of the best-known online poker networks; PartyCasino; and Foxy Bingo. BetMGM is the company's U.S. sports-betting and iGaming platform, offering sportsbook, casino and poker products across numerous states. Entain's proprietary platform is a significant asset, underpinning multiple brands and supporting BetMGM's operations.

Regulation and Compliance

The group is licensed in Great Britain through the Gambling Commission, as well as in Malta, Gibraltar, the Isle of Man, Alderney and various U.S. states. In 2023, Entain reached a deferred prosecution agreement with HM Revenue & Customs over a former Turkish-facing business, paying a significant financial settlement. The company has since used the episode to reinforce its focus on governance, compliance and safer gambling.

Leadership

Jette Nygaard-Andersen became CEO in 2020 but left in January 2024; Stella David, who had been a non-executive director, served as interim CEO before becoming chair. Gavin Isaacs, a long-time gaming industry executive, was appointed CEO in 2024. Rob Wood is group CFO, and Pratiksha Sripathy is CTO.

Market Position

Entain is one of the world's largest sports-betting and gaming companies, with roughly 25,000 employees and a major share of the UK retail betting market through Ladbrokes and Coral. Its U.S. growth is anchored by BetMGM, which has become a leading player in state-level sports betting and iGaming.
