Northern & Shell is a privately held British holding company founded in London in 1974 by Richard Desmond. Originally a magazine publisher, it grew into one of the UK's most prominent media groups, owning the Daily Express, Sunday Express, Daily Star and OK! before selling its entire print division to Reach plc in 2018. Since then the group's commercial identity has centred on gambling through the Health Lottery, a society lottery launched in 2011 under a Gambling Commission licence that uses a network of regional operators to direct part of ticket revenue to health-related good causes.
