Paddy Power Betfair plc (later Flutter Entertainment plc)

History

Paddy Power Betfair plc was incorporated in Ireland and began trading on 2 February 2016, following an all-share merger that gave Paddy Power shareholders roughly 52% and Betfair shareholders roughly 48% of the combined entity. The deal united Paddy Power, an Irish bookmaker whose high-street business grew from 1988, with Betfair, the London-founded betting exchange launched in 2000 by Andrew Black and Edward Wray. Breon Corcoran, who had been Betfair’s CEO, led the combined group until 2018, when Peter Jackson, previously Group CFO, took over as Chief Executive. In May 2019 the company was renamed Flutter Entertainment plc to better reflect a portfolio that extended well beyond the original two brands.

The Stars Group Acquisition and US Expansion

The defining strategic move came in 2020 with the acquisition of The Stars Group, which brought PokerStars and Sky Betting & Gaming into Flutter and substantially expanded the group’s international and US-facing operations. The deal also strengthened FanDuel, Flutter’s US brand, which has become the largest online sportsbook in the United States by revenue. Flutter moved its primary stock-exchange listing to the New York Stock Exchange in January 2024, while retaining its London listing, a shift driven by the growing share of revenue generated in the US.

Business Model

Flutter’s commercial model is predominantly B2C. It earns revenue from sportsbook margins, betting-exchange commissions, casino and poker rake, fantasy-sports entry fees, lottery products and retail betting-shop turnover. The group operates an omnichannel presence for Paddy Power, with online betting and gaming alongside high-street shops in Ireland and the UK. Although Flutter develops some internal platform capabilities, it is best classified as a consumer-facing gambling operator rather than a B2B platform supplier.

Flutter’s principal brands include FanDuel in the US; Paddy Power and Betfair in the UK and Ireland; Sportsbet in Australia; PokerStars internationally; Sisal in Italy; and Junglee Games in India. Betfair remains a global betting exchange and also offers sportsbook and casino products. PokerStars is the world’s largest online poker brand and includes a sportsbook and casino. Sky Betting & Gaming operates the Sky Bet, Sky Casino and Sky Vegas brands in the UK, while TVG provides US horse-racing wagering within FanDuel’s portfolio. Adjarabet is a leading online betting and casino brand in Georgia.

Market Position

Flutter is one of the largest listed gambling groups in the world by revenue. Its FanDuel business leads the US online sports-betting market, with a significant position in online casino and daily fantasy sports. In the UK and Ireland, the Paddy Power and Betfair brands are established consumer names, while Sportsbet is a leading Australian online sports-betting operator. The company’s main competitors include multinational operators such as Entain, Bet365 and DraftKings, as well as regional rivals in each market.

Regulation

Flutter operates under multiple regulatory regimes, including the UK Gambling Commission, Irish authorities, US state gaming regulators, the Italian ADM, and regulators in Australia and other international markets. This multi-jurisdiction licensing footprint reflects both the scale of the group and the regulatory complexity of the markets in which it operates.

Leadership and Governance

Flutter is chaired by John Bryant, with Peter Jackson as Group Chief Executive and Rob Coldrake as Chief Financial Officer. Other current senior executives include Ian Brown as Chief Operating Officer, Kresimir Spajic in a group commercial director role, Amy Burns as Chief People Officer, and Jonathan Hill as Chief Legal Officer and Company Secretary. The company is headquartered in Dublin and employed approximately 23,000 people globally in recent disclosures.
